IMT (Intima-Media Thickness)

An IMT ultrasound measures the thickness of the inner layers of the carotid artery to assess early signs of cardiovascular disease. This non-invasive test helps detect potential vascular risk factors, including early atherosclerosis, before more serious heart conditions arise.

Early Detection of Cardiovascular Risk

What Is IMT (Intima-Media Thickness)?

IMT stands for Intima-Media Thickness, which refers to the combined thickness of the innermost layers of the carotid artery wall. An IMT ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to measure this thickness, which is an indicator of early atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) and cardiovascular risk. Detecting increased IMT can help identify patients at risk of heart disease or stroke, allowing for early intervention.

Why Choose an IMT Ultrasound?

  • Early Cardiovascular Risk Assessment: Helps detect early signs of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) that could lead to heart disease or stroke.
  • Non-invasive & Safe: The test is completely non-invasive, safe, and does not involve radiation.
  • Accurate & Timely: A simple procedure that provides valuable information about your vascular health.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The IMT ultrasound is quick and easy. A licensed sonographer will apply a small amount of gel to your neck. The transducer (a small handheld device) will be gently moved across the skin to capture high-resolution images of your carotid arteries. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes, and you’ll receive radiologist-reviewed results the same day.
